Here in America there are a few foods that are so integrated into the American culture that they have become some of the most popular foods. Some of these foods can include: a cheeseburger, hot dog, nachos, pizza and chocolate chip cookies. After thinking about all of the foods that I love, and especially with Thanksgiving on the way, I thought that it would be nice to share some of the foods that are important to many of the different cultures in the Middle East. The Middle East have many popular, signature foods just as we do as Americans. Here are some of their most popular foods:
Hummus is a think spread that is made from ground chickpeas and sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon and garlic. This is good with many different things such as pretzels and pita bread.
Manakeesh is the pizza of the Arabic world. It is round bread sprinkled with either cheese, ground meat or herbs. It is mainly eaten for breakfast or lunch. You can get it from either a nice restaurant or from street vendors.
3. Grilled halloumi
Grilled Halloumi are small chewy slabs made from goat and sheep milk. These are different than other cheeses because these are not made with acid or bacteria during their processing.
4. Foul meddamas
Fould Meddamas is made of fava beans, olive oil, parsley, onion, garlic and lemon. This may not be the most delicious looking meal seeing as it is brown mush, but the taste and texture definitely make up for it!
Falafel is only fried chickpeas mixed with herbs, but people in the Middle East love it! It can be a delicious snack or you can use it to fill your pita. Also for Middle Easterners, the origins of the falafel started because of a patriotic interest.
Tabouleh is a vegetarian dish which is a combination of bulgur, parsley, mint, onion, and tomatoes. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy this dish though. It is something that everyone could love!
There are many great foods in the Middle East and they all seem worth trying! I personally love experiencing new foods, especially ones from different cultures. Find a recipe that looks good to you and try out one of these delicious foods. Experience another cultures cuisine. I’m sure you won’t regret it!
